Rapid Action Battalion-1 (RAB) nabbed three men from Ashulia in the capital on Monday morning in relation to the murder of the driver of a ridesharing company, Pathao.

They are Mamunur Rashid, 22, Mahbubur Rahman, 20, and Momin Mia, 20. They are garment workers and tea vendors during daytime but become dangerous muggers at night, police said.

The mobile phone and the blood-stained pants of the victim were also recovered. Lt Col Shahidullah Bulbul, commanding officer (CO) of RAB-1, revealed the information before a group of journalists at RAB-1 Headquarters.

On February 13, police recovered the body of driver Shamim Bepari Babu, 28, from a bamboo bush of Mollabari in Paloanpara of Ashulia.

Two days later, his father Shahin Bepari filed a murder case at Ashulia Police Station.  He said that after the incident, they opened a shadow investigation and came to know about the criminals.

During preliminary interrogation, the arrestees confessed to their involvement with the murder.

The Rab official quoted the accused as saying that they formed a gang to snatch vehicles in the guise of passengers.

Mamunur Rashid, who is the ring leader, told the force that he is a garment worker in daytime, but has been mugging people for the last five years at night.

One day before the incident, he rode on the motorcycle of Babu from Gabtali to Ashulia and targeted the motorbike.

The next day, Mamun again called Babu, who was living with his family in the city’s Khilgaon, and asked Babu to take him to Ashulia from Gabtali.

The victim carrying Mamun on his motorbike left Gabtali around 8:00 pm and reached Ashulia around 9:30 pm. Later, Mamun took him to the bush for smoking.

Then, the two others — Mahbubur and Momin — stabbed him to death.
