Writ filed against Tabith candidacy

A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Sunday, seeking its directive to revoke the candidacy of BNP mayoral candidate Tabith Awal for the allegedly concealment of his wealth information.

Former Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik filed the writ, two days after serving a legal notice to the Election Commission in this regard.

Justice Shamsuddin told reporters that the bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam may hear the petition today.

On Thursday, Justice Shamsuddin handed over the legal notice to Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam at the EC office in Agargaon of the capital.

In the notice, the former justice accused Tabith of concealing wealth information and violating electoral laws in his affidavit submitted to the Dhaka North City Corporation returning officer.

After the meeting with the commissioner, Justice Shamsuddin told reporters that he will move the High Court if the legal notice fails to fetch a response.

Tabith Awal is one of three shareholders of the Singapore-based NFM Energy PTE LTD, which he did not mention in his affidavit, and that’s why his nomination must be cancelled, the petitioner said.

According to media reports published earlier this month, Tabith owns the Singapore-based company along with his brothers Tafsir Awal and Tajwar Awal.

The company holds significant stakes in Bangladesh Petrochemical Company Limited (BPCL), of which Tajwar is a director as a representative of NFM Energy, say the reports.

BPCL is not included in the list of 37 companies that Tabith disclosed to the EC.
