Slum fire victim loses battle for life

The woman who suffered severe burns in a fire in the city’s Chalantika Slum succumbed to her injuries Saturday morning.

The victim named as Parveen, 35, died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s burn unit around 7:00 am.

Inspector Bachchu Mia, in charge of DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed this.

The fire injured two persons, including Parveen, and gutted about 150 shanties in the slum of Rupnagar early on Friday.

Earlier on August 16 last year, the several hundred shanties were destroyed in another fire.

Mentionable, hundreds of residents in Chalantika Jhilpar slum have lost their homes and all their possessions in another devastating fire – the second in only five months.

The fire broke out in the slum, located at Mirpur 7 in Dhaka, around 4:10am on Friday and razed at least 377 rooms to the grounds.
