The Art Of Giving

We are going through a restless period at the moment. There is a chaotic situation everywhere and the suffering of poor people is increasing gradually. Those unprivileged people need constant support and help to lead a standard life. This is where the significance of charity (the art of giving) comes in. Wealthy people should come forward and engage in philanthropic activities to maintain economical balance in the society.

The term ‘philanthropy’ means the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes and an individual who engages in philanthropy activity by donating his or her time, wealth and reputation to charitable causes is considered as a philanthropist. A true philanthropist always puts himself/herself in poor people’s shoes to understand their pain and needs with a view to filling the gap those people are having in their miserable life. As a matter of fact, many people are oblivious to the benefits of engaging in the philanthropic activity. The benefits can eventually change the way someone considers the act of giving.

It gives you comfort

Nowadays, the tendency to fall in depression is so common among the youths for several reasons. Some of them fall into such trauma that they cannot but take their own lives because they find no interest in living in this cruel world. But it is true that the world is not cruel to an individual and there are many who are suffering both mentally and financially. Booker Taliaferro Washington, an American educator, once said, “If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else”. For an example, you can see lots of street children on the street. Whenever you will help a street child, they will express gratitude to you with a beautiful smile. That smile is worth enough to change your mood instantly and stop you from taking any perilous decision. Moreover, a study, conducted by the University of Oregon, found that charitable contributions create a response in the brain that mimics one activated by drugs and other stimuli. Charitable giving can feel pleasurable in the deepest parts of your physiology.

Personal network

If someone wants to reach the peak of success in life, one must grow his/her network by communicating with the mass people. Philanthropic activity is one of the effective ways to meet, communicate and know many people which later on adds value to one’s personal contact. Luke Weil, the founder of Andina Acquisition, once said, “Networking can help your philanthropic impact, the same way it can help you scale your business venture or personal contact to the next level”. Whenever you take the initiative to help the needy persons, you will notice that many people such as entrepreneur, company and even the individual are striving to contribute to your plan. For example - during the winter season you may want to donate winter clothes among the people in need. So, when you will begin distributing clothes, you will be getting response from others as well who want to help. Therefore, you will find yourself meeting new people and enriching your contact.

It helps develop skills

Every individual wants to develop their career in such ways so that they can standardize their lifestyle. To reach the peak of success one must develop his/her skills to get a better job alongside grades. However, if an individual is considering a new career, volunteering can help you get experience in your area of interest and meet people working in the field. Even if you are not planning to change your career, volunteering will give you the opportunity to practice important skills used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, project planning and task management. You might feel more comfortable while stretching your wings at work once you’ve honed these skills in a volunteer position. It is true that volunteer activities are often unpaid but the skills you can learn from volunteering will never go in vain. However, many volunteering opportunities provide extensive training for freshers. For example, you could become an experienced crisis counselor by engaging yourself in shelters during the disastrous time. At that time, you will learn to manage everything during strenuous situation. With this skill and experience you will be able to take charge under tough condition and this will reward you in the upcoming days.

An improved sense of well-being

When you will start helping others, you will get to explore more. You will get to know about the problems people face in their lives from a close proximity which will, in turn, grow a sense of well-being in you. Charitable works will also make you a better person as you will gradually learn to empathize with people, especially those belonging to the lower strata of the society.

You don’t have to be a rich man to get started with philanthropy. All you need is the strong desire to help others, and the willingness to put in the efforts to bring about a change in the society.
