The High Court has asked Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to submit a report on the traffic signal ‘mismanagement’ in Dhaka by 30 days.
In this regard, the court asked DMP Additional Commissioner (traffic) to do the needful.A division bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Monday, following a writ petition.
Supreme Court lawyers Monoj Kumar Bhowmik and Sulaiman Hawlader Mintu jointly filed the petition with the High Court praying for necessary order to end traffic signal mismanagement.
The petitioners brought the court attention to a news item headlined “Unutilised Traffic Lights: Money wasted, streets made dangerous.”
The High Court ordered the government to frame guidelines within the next 30 days in order to operate traffic signal system properly.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities to show cause as to why failure to operate the traffic signal in Dhaka shall not be declared illegal.
Barrister Monoj Kumar Bhowmik told the court that wrong traffic signals are causing accidents and casualties in the capital.
