Rohingya drug peddler killed in ‘gunfight’

COX’S BAZAR: A Rohingya drug peddler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf upazila in the district early Sunday.

 The deceased was identified as Md Aiyas, 25, son of Md Jamal Hossain of Kutupalong Rohingya camp under the upazila.

 Teknaf-2, BGB Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Faisal Hasan Khan said on information that a gang of drug peddlers was entering Bangladesh with Yaba tablets through Jadimora area of Naf river under Hnila union, a team of the BGB raided the area at around 4:30am.  As the BGB-men challenged them, the criminals tried to flee the scene with a sack.

 At one stage of chase, the drug peddlers opened fire on the BGB-men prompting them to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, he said.

 Later, Aiyas was found lying on the spot in bullet-hit condition, said the BGB officer.

 He was sent to Teknaf Health Complex and later shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
