JS goes into New Year session today

The parliament goes into its sixth session today. It will be the first session of the New Year 2020.

The day’s business will begin at 4:00pm with Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

President Abdul Hamid on December 24 convened the session exercising the power bestowed upon him as per the clause (1) of the article 72 of the constitution.

As per the constitution, the President will address the House at the first day sitting of New Year.

In his address, the President will highlight various development activities of the government. The cabinet has already endorsed the speech of the President.

Sources at Parliament Secretariat say that the House will adopt an obituary reference on the death of lawmaker Yunus Ali Sarker of Gaibandha-3 constituency. Sarker passed away on December 27.

As per the tradition, the Speaker will adjourn the sitting of the House after munajat as a mark of respect to the deceased lawmaker.

The Speaker will adjourn the House for sometime and will run the session again so that the President can deliver his address.

After the President’s speech, the House runs discussions on the thanksgiving motion on the speech.

Before the beginning of the session, the Business Advisory Committee, headed by the Speaker, will sit for a meeting to fix the tenure of the session.

Prime Minister and Leader of the House Sheikh Hasina will attend the meeting, among others.

As per the constitution, the President must convene a session within 60 days after the last sitting of the last session.

The last session of parliament was prorogued on November 14 with the passage of five bills.
