A female garment worker was killed and nine other pedestrians were injured in an explosion at a sweater factory in Gouripur area under Ashulia of Savar, on the outskirts of the capital on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Rima Khatun, 20.Sources said a portion of the wall of the two-storey factory ‘Natural Sweater Village Ltd’ collapsed when a gas heater machine of the factory exploded in the morning.
Savar Fire Service Zone Commander Anwarul Haq said Rima died on the spot when she was walking on the adjacent road and the wall collapsed on her. The injured pedestrians were also crossing the area during the incident, he added. One of the injured was rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) as his condition deteriorated and others were admitted at Enam Medical College Hospital.
After the incident, local people demanded punishment of the factory owner Raju Ahmed of Chadgaon area of Ashulia. Officer-in-Charge of Ashulia Police Station Sheikh Rezaul Haque Dipu said necessary steps will be taken after proper investigation.
