Language hero Rawshan Ara Bachchu dies

Language movement activist Rawshan Ara Bachchu dies on Tuesday at the age of 87.

The valiant woman who played an active role in the Language Movement of 1952, passed away around 3:30 am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital in Dhaka.

Rawshan was sick for several days and was hospitalised, said her daughter Tahmida Bachchu. 

She was laid to rest at a graveyard in her village Kulaura in Moulvibazar following funeral prayers on Tuesday. Earlier, a public tribute was held in front of Bangla Academy in the capital.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed profound shock and sorrow at the demise of a language movement veteran Rawshan Ara Bachchu.  In a message of condolence, the premier recalled Rawshan Ara’s contribution to the language movement.

Rawshan was born on Dec 17, 1932 in Kulaura of Moulvibazar. She joined the Democratic Progressive Front after her admission to Dhaka University.

Rawshan was one of the pioneers who wanted to hold a peaceful procession defying a ban on rallies.
