The ruling Awami League is looking for honest, dedicated and clean-image leaders for induction in its youth wing Jubo League ahead of the council of the organisation.

The image of Jubo League has seriously been tarnished as some of its senior leaders have been found involved in illegal casino business and other controversial activities.

Insiders say that honest and dedicated leaders will be inducted in the new committee of the Awami League’s youth body in the upcoming council to regain its image.

To bring young leadership in the organisation through the council slated for November 23, Awami League has restricted the age limit to 55 years for Jubo League politics.

As per the new age limit, polarisation has been created in selecting new leadership as most of senior Jubo League leaders will be axed from the organisation.

Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is gathering information from party and intelligence agencies to select dynamic and sound leadership of Juba League, insiders say.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader recently said that new faces will be brought in the new committee to lead the youth organisation of their party.

New faces have already been named for top two posts of the other three associate bodies – Krishak League, Sramik League and Swechchhasebak League.

There is a chance for getting a new face for any of the top two posts from outside the organisation, sources said.

“But decision on inducting a person from outside can only be taken by party chief Sheikh Hasina,” Chayan Islam, presidium member and convener of the council preparatory committee, told the daily sun.

It is learnt that most of the Jubo League’s presidium members have crossed the age limit. There is a chance of getting a relative of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for the president post.

Bangabandhu’s relatives — founding chairman Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni, Amir Hossain Aamu, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Omar Faroque Chowdhury — were made chairman of the past Jubo League committees.

So there is a chance for selecting Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, son of Sheikh Moni, as chairman of the Awami League’s youth organisation, a Jubo League leader said on condition of anonymity.

Many Juba League leaders are vying for top two posts. They include presidium members Ataur Rahman Ata and Belal Hossain, joint secretaries Mohiudding Ahmed Mohi, Monjur Alam Shaheen and Subrata Pal, organising secretaries Badiul Alam, Faruk Hasan Tuhin, and Fazlul Haque Atiq.

Sources said former Chhatra League leaders Bahadur Bepari, Ishaq Ali Khan Panna, Mahmud Hasan Ripon, Mahfujul Haider Chowdhury Roton, Syed Alaul Islam Shaikat and incumbent publicity secretary Iqbal Mahmood Bablu may get important posts.

With the council around the corner, Jubo League leaders aspiring for positions in the new committee are lobbying hard with influential Awami League leaders, sources said.

The present committee of Jubo League was formed in the last council session held on July 14, 2012. The tenure of the committee expired three years ago in 2015.

Chairman of the committee Omar Faroque Chowudhury was relieved from the party for his alleged involvement in illegal casino business and other irregularities.
