CHATTOGRAM: A robber was killed in a gunfight with police in the city’s Nasirabad area early Monday.

The deceased was identified as Azizul alias Aizza Dakat.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pranab Chowdhury of Khulshi police station said a gang of robbers took away gold ornaments, two mobile phone sets and money from a residence in Garibullah Housing Society on Friday afternoon.

House owner Ariful Hoque filled a case with Khulshi police station in this connection. “We arrested driver of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw used in the robbery and a jewellery shop owner and his associate with the  ornaments looted from the house,” the OC said.

Acting on their statements, police went to the residential area of Nasirabad Properties Limited to arrest Aziz, who was the mastermind of the robbery, on Monday early hours, he said.

As police reached the spot, the criminals opened fire prompting the cops to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, OC Pranab said.

Later, Aziz was found lying in bullet-hit condition on the spot. He was sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, he said.

One local gun and two rounds of live cartridge were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, said the OC adding that Aziz was accused and convicted in different cases and came out in bail around three months back.
