Rajshahi University students have blocked Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in front of the university on Saturday to protest against an alleged assault on a fellow by activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Two Chhatra League activists allegedly beat up Shohrab Mia, a third-year student of Department of Finance and Banking and a resident student of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall, on Friday midnight.

After the news spread, hundreds of agitating students brought out a procession on Saturday morning and later took position on the highway, triggering long tailbacks on both sides of the highway.

They were chanting slogans demanding expulsion of two Chhatra League activists – Asif Luck and Humayun Kabir Nahid – who allegedly beat up their fellow student, Shohrab Mia.

Asif and Nahid are fourth-year students of the university and also followers of Golam Kibria, BCL president of the university unit. They are also the residents of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall.

They also demanded the removal of the provost of the RU’s Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall where the incident took place.

On Friday midnight, Asif Luck of Islamic studies department and Humayun Kabir Nahid of Bangla department took Shohrab to room no. 254 of the hall around 12:30am and beat him for half an hour, a resident student of Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Hall.

Shohrab’s friends took him to the university medical centre afterwards from where he was referred to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH).

Shohrab suffered injuries to his head and was undergoing treatment at RMCH. He received 15 stitches to his head, victim’s friends said.
