Nirmal, Afzal new president, secy of Swechchhasebak League

Nirmal Ranjan Guha and Afzalur Rahman Babu have been elected new president and general secretary of Swechchhasebak League respectively.

Ishak Mia and Anisur Rahman Nayeem have been made president and general secretary of the organisation’s north city unit while Kamrul Hasan Ripon and Tareque Sayeed have been elected as president and general secretary of its south city unit, respectively.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Saturday announced their names after the end of the second session of the council held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in the capital.

Earlier, the councilors proposed six names for the post of president and 12 names for the post of general secretary.

As per custom, aspirants of the two posts held a discussion among them and tried to reach a consensus.

As they failed to reach consensus, Awami League General Secretary talked to party president Sheikh Hasina over phone in this regard.

Sheikh Hasina asked Quader to announce the name of Nirmal, convenor of the council preparation committee and vice-president of the outgoing committee and Babu, also vice-president of the outgoing committee, as the president and general secretary, respectively.

Earlier in the morning, Awami League president Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the third council session of Swechchhasebak League by releasing pigeons and balloons at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan.

Swechchhasebak League, an associate body of the ruling Awami League, was founded in 1997 with a convening committee led by Mokbul Hossain and Habibur Rahman Habib.

Its first council session was held in 2003 and AFM Bahauddin Nasim and Pankaj Debnath were elected president and general secretary respectively. The last council session of the organisation was held seven years ago in 2012 and Molla Mohammad Abu Kawser and Pankaj elected as president and general secretary respectively.

But both of them were relieved recently from their respective posts after the government started cleansing drive against casino owners and different irregularities.
