Two Bangladeshi films titled ‘Chandrabati Kotha’ and ‘Alpha’ will be screened in the eight-day 25th Kolkata International Film Festival beginning on November 8.

The feature film ‘Chandrabati Kotha’ will have its world premiere at the Film Festival. The film is competing in the Asian Select NETPAC Award category.

Directed by N Rashed Chowdhury, ‘Chandrabati Kotha’ is based on the life of Bengal’s first feminist poet, Chandrabati, is set in mid-sixteenth century Eastern Bengal.

Chandrabati, the young daughter of veteran poet Dij-Banshidas, falls in love with another poet Jayananda. On the eve of their marriage, Jayananda betrays Chandrabati and marries another woman in the locality. The pain stricken Chandrabati confines herself in a Shiva Temple and takes her vow to rewrite the epic Ramayana.  

Adapted from the ballads found in the Mymensingh Geetika, the film ‘Chandrabati Kotha’ sheds light on the golden era of medieval Bangla Literature.

Popular artistes Dilruba Hossain Doyel, Jayanta Chattopadhyay, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed, Gazi Rakayet, among others, played the crucial roles in the 105-minute long film.

Kolkata’s Satyakee Banerjee composed the music and Sankha Biswas did the editing of the film. 

On the other hand, the plot of Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu directed film ‘Alpha’ centered on an urban citizen of third world country. Alpha features the life of a painter who lives in the outskirt of Dhaka and finds the city life and his artistic aspirations in a collision.

Popular Model Alamgir Kabir Doyel has played the lead role. This is her silver screen debut. Veteran actor ATM Shamsuzzaman will also be seen along with some new comers who had been selected by audition.

Impress telefilm presents Alpha is produced by Faridur Reza Sagar and Esha Yousuff.

And Nasiruddin Yousuff himself wrote the story and script while Catherine Masud edited the film.   

The 25th Kolkata International Film Festival which will begin at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium in Kolkata on November 8. 

Bollywood megastars Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Jaya Bachchan, Rakhee Gulzar, Mahesh Bhatt and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, among others, will attend the inaugural ceremony of the festival.  A total of 214 feature films and 152 short and documentary films from 76 countries will be screened at 17 venues during the eight-day long extra-vaganza.
