Digital Island, a new project having digital facilities, was inaugurated at Moheshkhali, the only mountainous island in Bangladesh, on Monday.

Moheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Jamirul Islam inaugurated the project. The Digital Island is a comprehensive programme that links residents of Moheshkhali to the world through the fastest internet speeds.

The project is being implemented by the Government, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and Korea Telecom, said a press release.

The Digital Island programme aims to create opportunities for Moheshkhali residents by enhancing existing public services through ICT.

Under the project, 25 government institutions are connected with high speed internet. Distance learning services will be provided to 10 primary schools from grade one-three via real time video conferencing that connects teachers in Dhaka with Moheshkhali students.

Mobile health services will be available through four community health clinics and one Upazila health complex. Services include electronic medical record systems, telemedicine consultations and diagnoses by mobile healthcare devices, ultrasound devices and blood testers.
