KHULNA: The 3rd “National Road Safety Day-2019” was observed in the city on Tuesday in a befitting manner as different organisations took elaborate programmes to mark the day, reports BSS.

Bangladesh Road and Transport Association (BRTA) Khulna Circle organised the programmes in cooperation with Khulna district administration.

This year’s theme of the day is: ‘Jiboner Age Jibika Noy, Sarak Durghatana Ar Noy’ (Livelihood is not before life, no more road accident).

Government officials at a post-rally discussion here on Tuesday laid emphasis on ensuring safe driving, professional skill of drivers and obeying traffic rules for reducing road accidents.

They viewed this at the meeting at Deputy Commissioners’ conference room in observance of the 3rd “National Road Safety Day-2019”.

Mayor of Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khaleque attended the discussion as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Magistrate (ADM) Md.  Yousuf Ali in the chair.

Additional divisional commissioner Nischinta Kumar Poddar, general secretary of ‘Nirapad Sarak Chai’ Iqbal Hossain Biplob, addressed the meeting, among others.

KCC Mayor alleged that lack of awareness and non-compliance of traffic rules are main reasons behind road accidents.

He blamed the public representatives for not taking action against huge number of factories which manufactured illegal three wheelers locally.

The speakers said inadequate skill of some drivers, faulty vehicles, roadside hat-bazaars, violation of traffic rules and using mobile phones while driving are the main reasons behind road accidents.

The chief guest suggested drivers, supervisors, helpers and transport workers to properly know the reasons behind road accidents and behave accordingly for reducing the extent of road accidents by ensuring safe driving on the roads and highways.

Earlier, a rally participated by officials, drivers, supervisors, conductors, right activists, leaders of road transport workers and owners’ associations, rover scouts and students was brought out Shaheed Hadis Park and paraded different main streets in the city.
