COX’S BAZAR: Two drug peddlers were killed in separate gunfights with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Police at Teknaf upazila in the district on early Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Md Rahim Uddin Rafiq, 37, son of Abdul Jalil, and Md Aziz, 24, son of Saleh Ahmed of Teknaf upazila in the district.Teknaf-2, BGB Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Md Faisal Hasan Khan said a team of the BGB was patrolling in Jora area near the river Naf around 1:00am.
They noticed some persons in boat in the river and signaled them.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the criminals opened fire on the BGB-men prompting them to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, he said.
At one stage, Rahim was found lying in bullet-hit condition at the spot, said the BGB officer.
The injured drug peddler was rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where on-duty physicians declared him dead, he said.
A total of 60,000 pieces of Yaba tablet, one local firearm, two sharp weapons and three rounds of bullet were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, said Faisal.Two BGB-men were also injured during the gunfight, he added.
On the other hand, Md Aziz was killed in a gunfight with police in Moheshakhali Para area under the upazila around 4:00am.
Officer in-Charge Pradip Kumar Das of Teknaf police station said three cops were injured during the gunfight.
