130 shops gutted by fire in Ctg

A devastating fire gutted 130 shops and warehouses at Jahur Hawkers Market and its adjoining Jalalabad Markets in Chittagong city. —Rabin Chowdhury

At least 130 garment shops and warehouses were gutted in a devastating fire at Jahur Hawkers’ Market and its adjoining Jalalabad Markets at Kotwali in Chattogram city on Saturday.

Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) sources said a fire broke out in  Jalalabad Market at 3:50am and spread fast engulfing the adjoining Jahur Hawkers’ Market.

Jasim Uddin, Assistant Director of Chattogram FSCD, said firefighters from Agrabad, Nandankanon, Chandanpura and Kalurghat fire stations rushed to the spot and brought the flame under control after a frantic effort of six hours. Causes and extent of damages in the fire could not be ascertained immediately. It can be known after investigation, he said.

Jahur Hawkers’ Market Traders’ Association President Mohammad Hossain Babul said damages in the fire could exceed around Tk3 crore.

Officer in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mohsin of Kotwali Police Station said they could know that some 130 shops and warehouses were burnt in the fire.

At least 25 shops of the Hawkers’ market were gutted and the remaing gutted shops belong to  Jalalabad market, he added.

Chattogram City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin visited the spot and talked to the affected businessmen.
