BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday called upon the country’s people to take to the street to release party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail and ‘revive’ democracy.

“Staying at home or only delivering speech cannot ensure Khaleda Zia’s release from jail and restoration of democracy. All have to come forward to this end,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the statements speaking at a protest meeting arranged by ‘Zia Mukti Parishad’ at the Jatiya Press Club in the

capital.

The BNP leader further said, “Khaleda Zia deserves bail, but she is deprived of it. Many of us say that lawyers cannot ensure Khaleda Zia’s release. But the government is controlling the Supreme Court. She has been punished out of political vengeance,” he said.

Slamming the agreements signed with India, Khandaker Mosharraf said, “If there was people’s government in the country, it would not have inked the deals with India in such a way. The government has done it as they are weak. We want to be on good terms with India (but it must be) based on equality.”

He alleged that the country’s economy has been ‘destroyed during the Awami League rule while people of the administration cannot work independently’.

Terming the government’s ongoing drive against irregularities and corruption ‘eyewash’, Mosharraf said casino operators have been arrested, but the masterminds are yet to be nabbed.
