Rajshahi: A couple died on Friday while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) after being bitten by snakes, reports UNB.
The deceased were identified as Noor Islam, 30, and his wife Mousumi Khatun, 26, of Ramcharanpur village of Naogaon's Mohadevpur upazila.RMCH emergency department doctor Belal Hossain said the couple was bitten by 'Common Krait' snake.
Victim's uncle Abdur Rahim said Noor and Mousumi were bitten around 2am while they were sleeping.
They were taken to Mohadevpur Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to RMCH as there was no anti venom, he said. They were given anti venom but died around 9am.
Noor's father Sirazul Islam had also died from a snakebite about a month ago.
He said all three could have been saved if the upazila hospital had anti-venom.
According to the World Health Organization, snakebites kill an estimated 81,000 to 138,000 people every year, mostly in rural and impoverished areas.Another 400,000 people are left permanently injured, with amputated limbs, blindness or other severe disabilities due to the venom's effects, says WHO.
