Detectives arrested another accused in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Abrar Fahad murder case from Sylhet in the early hours of Friday.

The arrestee was identified as Md Majedul Islam, 21, a 17th batch student of materials and metallurgical engineering department of Buet, said DMP deputy commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court granted five-day remand to grill two other arrested Chhatra League (BCL) leaders, Amit Saha and Hossain Mohammed Toha, on Friday.

Amit, who used to reside at Sher-e-Bangla Hall, where Abrar was beaten to death, was arrested in the capital’s Sabujbagh area and Toha was picked up from Gazipur’s Mawna area on Thursday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sarafuzzaman Ansari issued the remand order after rejecting the arrestees’ bail pleas on Friday.

DMP official Masudur Rahman said, “A team Detective Branch (DB) of police (South Dhanmondi) conducted a drive in Sylhet’s Shah Kiron area and arrested Majedul around 4:00am on Friday.”

“Majedul’s name has been mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) and he will be produced before court,” he stated.

With Majedul’s arrest, the number of arrestees in connection with Abrar murder stood at 17.

Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Buet’s electrical and electronic engineering department, died after he was beaten to death allegedly by a group of BCL men at the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall on Sunday.

Later, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed the murder case against 19 with  Chawkbazar police.

The incident triggered massive protests on various university campuses across the country. Many took to social media demanding justice for Abrar.

He was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, that criticized some recent deals between Bangladesh and India.
