BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday alleged that everybody in the government -- from the high-ups to the employees working in the lowest grades -- is ‘complicit in corruption’.

“The government is thoroughly corrupt. Some evidence has surfaced in the last few days. From Dhaka city unit (Awami League) to Jubo League, Chhatra League and university level have been involved in corruption which is alarming for the country and its people,” he said. The BNP leader came up with the statements while talking to reporters after placing wreaths along with newly elected president and general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Banglanagar in the capital.

When asked about the remarks of Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader that the ‘casino culture’ started during the rule of BNP, he said no such incident was reported in the national media during that period of time. But now, during the rule of Awami League, the matter of casino has come to light, he said. “By making such remarks, the government wants to avoid their responsibility. But none can avoid the public wrath,” Mirza Fakhrul added.

He further said, “It has been proved that Awami League government is not only concerned in corruption but also has destroyed political as well as social structures and has turned the country into a failed state in true sense.” The BNP secretary general said the newly elected leaders of Chhatra Dal have sworn to orchestrate an ‘irresistible’ movement to ensure release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail.

BNP leaders including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Fazlul Haque Milon, Khairul Kabir Khokon, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, Abdul Awal Khan, Shahidul Islam, Amirul Islam Khan Alim, Shafiul Bari Babu, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and former Chhatra Dal leaders Rajib Hassan and Akramul Hossain were also present.
