Ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said no wrongdoers would be spared if found to be involved in any wrongdoing.

“No wrongdoer along with any Jubo League or Chhatra League (BCL) leader will be spared. The government is also identifying the people inside Awami League who are involved in criminal activities,” he said.

Quader, also Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, was addressing at a press conference at party president Sheikh Hasina’s political office in the capital’s Dhanmondi.

Terming the drive as a good instance of incumbent government, the minister claimed the popularity of the government has increased for taking action against corrupt BCL and Jubo League leaders.

“The image of Awami League as well as of the government has brightened as action is being taken against the wrongdoers,” he said.

Quader said the government is proceeding with its ‘zero tolerance’ policy against corruption and misdeeds.

“Everywhere in the country where there are corruption and irregularities, drives will be conducted to uproot the social ills. It’s not only Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders, but Awami League leaders too will face the same fate if they are found to be involved in corruption,” he said.

About drives against illegal casinos, the minister said, “Action will be taken against the person who is involved in illegal casino business with the help of any political leader or anyone from the administration. No godfather will be spared.”

Replying to a query on BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s statement that Awami League had turned Dhaka, the city of mosques into a city of casinos, the ruling party leader said it is BNP itself who turned Dhaka city into a city of casinos.

“Bangladesh Nationalist Party never took action against the wrongdoers, but it is Awami League who is taking action against irregularities, plundering, corruption and killings by their party men,” he said.

Asked whether AL is embarrassed over the allegations raised against its associate bodies, he said, “We are happy as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become more popular following the actions taken by her. Her actions have brightened the image of the party as well as of the government.”
