Ensure treatment for all: Speaker

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday called upon physicians and pharmacists to work together to ensure treatment for all.

“Pharmaceutical sector is an important sector in national economy. Country’s economy may get stronger further by utilizing the pharmaceutical sector,” she said while addressing a policy dialogue as the chief guest at a city hotel.

Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh in association with the World Health Organisation arranged event on Good Pharmacy Practice in Hospital Pharmacy Settings of Bangladesh.

The Speaker said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led government’s prime philosophy is to ensure health services for all.

“Some 14,000 community clinics have been set up across the country. Each clinic has been administering treatment to 6,000 people and providing 32 types of medicines free of cost,” she said.

The Speaker said the pharmacists have relentlessly been working to ensure the best treatment through research, production and marketing of medicine.

“A huge change has been made in pharmaceutical industry due to time befitting decision of the government,” she said.

Health and family welfare minister Zahid Maleque, state minister for public administration Farhad Hossain, Professor emeritus AK Azad Chowdhury, Directorate General of Health Services director general Professor Abul Kalam Azad and WHO representative in Bangladesh Bardan Jung Rana also addressed the programme with Pharmacy Council president Asadul Islam in the chair.

Meanwhile, representatives of UK All Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health and Bangladesh Association of Parliamentarian on Population and Development called on the Speaker at Parliament Secretariat.
