CHATTOGRAM: Police arrested an office assistant of the Election Commission and two of his associates in the port city on Monday night for their involvement in providing NID cards for Rohingyas.

The arrested are Joynal Abedin, office assistant of the Double-mooring election office, and his associates Bijoy Das and Shima Das.

Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mohsin of Kotwali Police Station said EC officials detained the trio and handed them over to police after an investigation into the incident.

Election Officer Pallabi Chakma of Double-mooring Office filed a case against five persons, including the trio, with the police station on Tuesday morning, he said.

Chattogram Regional Election Officer Md Hasanuzzaman said five Rohingyas have been arrested in Cox’s Bazar in recent times for their attempt to be enlisted in a voter list with the help of Joynal Abedin.

“An EC team interrogated Joynal Abedin who admitted having a laptop which was kept to his friend Bijoy,” he said.

Later, Bijoy was called in the EC office. He said the laptop was kept to his sister Shima. Shima was also called in and the trio was handed over to the police, said the election officer.

Mentionable, a woman introducing herself as Lucky went to Chattogram Election Office on August 18 to take a smart NID card.      On suspicion, the officials concerned quizzed the woman who admitted coming to Bangladesh from Myanmar in 2014 and her name is Ramjan Bibi.

Earlier, she obtained an NID card with a false address.

The Election Office has identified 46 Rohingyas who obtained NID cards with fake information.

Sources said a high-level team from the Election Commission is investigating the incident.
