Ruling Awami League has sacrificed the Rangpur-3 seat by withdrawing its candidate in favour of the candidate of Jatiya Party, a partner of the Grand Alliance.

Ruling party candidate Rezaul Karim Razu on Monday pulled out of the election race in Rangpur-3 by-poll by withdrawing his candidature in favour of Jatiya Party candidate, Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, the eldest son of HM Ershad.

The seat fell vacant at the death of Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad. Razu, also general secretary of Rangpur district Awami League, submitted an application to the returning officer (RO) at the Election Commission office in Rangpur for withdrawal of his candidature.

Amid opposition from the party leaders and activists, he told media about his withdrawal from the election race ‘for the sake of the party’.

“I sacrifice myself for the sake of the party. I submitted my nomination form as per directive of the party chief, Sheikh Hasina. I also withdraw my candidature as per her directive,” he told media after withdrawing his nomination paper.

“Razu was a valid candidate, but he pulled out of the election race on the last date of withdrawal of nomination papers, said RO Shahtab Uddin.

After withdrawal of his nomination paper, Jatiya Party-nominated Saad Ershad and BNP-nominated Rita Rahman will contest the by-election scheduled to be held on October 5.
