CHATTOGRAM: Election Commissioner (EC) Kabita Khanam on Monday said legal action will be taken against responsible officials and employees if their involvement in providing the Rohingyas with NID is found in investigation.

She said this while talking to journalists at Chattogram Regional Election Office in the city.

The commissioner said she discussed different issues with the election officials so that the Rohingyas cannot get any NID.

“The officials observed that sometimes the nationality of intended voters cannot be identified with submitted documents. It can be verified if the voter comes face to face,” she said.

The election officials are very alert now. Some Rohingyas have already been identified, said the commissioner.

“We offered a perfect voter list in 2007 and 2008, and the election officials were involved with the process,” she said.

The Rohingyas were registered with biometric system and the data are available to the EC. So, they will be identified if want to be voter, said Kabita.

The Rohingyas got NID through syndicate and some of the Rohingyas have already been arrested.

Regarding missing of some laptops from the election office in Chattogram in 2014, she said case was filed in this connection then and investigation was carried out.

If anyone of the EC is found involved with the incident will face departmental action while those of outside criminal case, she warned.

She believed that none of the officials and employees of the EC was involved in providing NID to the Rohingyas.

Asked about the primary findings of involvement of the EC employees in investigation by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), she said the EC will also investigate into the matter beside the ACC.
