BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday called upon the opposition political parties to get united in a bid to ‘restore’ democracy in the country.

“Despite differences of opinion on various issues, I urge all political parties to work together to “restore” democracy,” he said. The BNP leader came up with the statement speaking at a view-exchange meeting arranged by Nagorik Oikya at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital.

Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna chaired the event.

“Of course, unity among the political parties will be made for the demand of the people. There is no alternative to forging unity,” he added.

Admitting that the Jatiya Oikyafront is now inactive, Mirza Fakhrul said the components of the opposition coalition, including BNP, are reorganising their party and they will be active immediately.

Earlier at a human-chain, the BNP secretary general demanded the government sack Jahangirnagar University (JU) Vice Chancellor Farzana Islam immediately for reportedly bribing Chhatra League leaders.

“There’s an interesting news item that the offence of demanding bribe at JU has been named as ‘fair share’. This means the percentage they (BCL leaders) demanded is their ‘fair share’. The JU VC has already given Tk 1 crore as bribe,” he said.

Mirza Fakhrul further said, “So, why should only two students (BCL president and secretary) be removed? The VC should either resign or be sacked immediately.”
