The wife of a union parishad chairman candidate in Munshiganj Sadar upazila has demanded withdrawal of false cases filed against her husband and his immediate release.

Rumi Akhter, wife of Yousuf Hasan, a resident of Mollahkandi union in Munshiganj Sadar upazila, made the demand at a press conference at the Crime Reporters’ Association of Bangladesh in the capital on Wednesday.

Rumi said, “Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) picked up Yousuf and filed false cases against him. He is now in jail. We want an unconditional release of my husband who has a business in Qatar.”

Mollahkandi Union Parished chairman Kolpona Akhter and the union AL president Forhad Khan were present at the press conference, among others.

Rumi further said, “My husband is an activist of Bangladesh Awami League. He is a chairman candidate of the union council election scheduled to be held on September 4.  He arranged a meeting on September 3 at our house and a large number of leaders and activists of the ruling party attended the meeting.”

“Around 7:00pm, a group of RAB members entered the house and asked all but my husband to leave the place.  Later, they took my husband on the bank of the Padma River. But they left the place in face of local people’s demonstration who demanded his release. The RAB members also beat the demonstrators leaving at least 200 of them injured,” Rumi said.

“We went to Munshiganj Sadar police station on September 4 and learnt that RAB had filed two cases against my husband. One has been filed on illegal drug charge and the other for ‘vandalism’. But my husband is not involved in the illegal acts,” she said.

“Actually, my husband’s rival groups ‘managed’ RAB for harassing my husband,” she said.

“My husband is now in jail. He is passing critical moments as he is suffering from heart disease,” she added.

She also urged the prime minister to intervene for release of her innocent husband.
