Homoeopathy, an alternative medicine system, can be used to treat patients infected with dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease, homeopathic physicians claimed.

“We also give preventive medicine like Eupatorium for dengue disease. If this medicine is taken, then people can remain protected from dengue infection,” Dr Md Al-Emran Ali, head of Materia Medica department of Government Homoeopathic Medical College Hospital (GHMCH), told the daily sun.

He claimed that there are around 40 medicines in homoeopathy, which can be used to treat dengue patients based on similarity of symptoms. “Of the medicines, there are 12-13 common medicines to treat people infected with dengue fever,” he said.

The GHMCH, situated in Mirpur of the capital, has opened a dengue unit at the hospital and they are carrying out necessary tests for possible dengue patients and giving treatment to the classical dengue patients at the hospital‘s indoor and outdoor departments, hospital sources said.

“We are now giving treatment for classical dengue in our hospital. If we get any severe dengue patients, then we refer them to any other allopathic medicine hospital. If we get logistic support, then we can also give treatment to severe dengue patients,” Al-Emran Ali said. Describing the method of dengue treatment through homoeopathic medicine, the GHMCH physician said they treat the dengue patients through pushing salaine for bringing fluid balance in the body of patients and give medicine as alternative to allopathic medicine ‘paracetamol’ for fever usually.

Talking to the daily sun, Dr Md Abdul Mojid, principal-cum- superintendent of the government homoeopathic medical college and hospital, said at the same time they are giving treatment and medicine for the dengue patients at the hospital.

According to the data of health directorate, over 62,000 patients have been hospitalised with dengue infection across the country this year. Of them, 47 people so far have died of dengue fever. And over 43,000 patients have so far been admitted to hospitals with dengue infection alone this month.

According to health experts, dengue is a vector-borne disease transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. There are four serotypes of the virus that causes dengue. These are known as DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4.

The homoeopathic physicians said there are several medicines for treatment of dengue. “Eupatorium perfoliatum is one of the most frequently indicated medicines for it. There are many other similar effective medicines like Phos, Ars alb, Ipecac and Rhus tox, which are given as per the patients’ symptoms,” said a homoeopathic physician.

Experts said dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash. There are three types of dengue fever -- Dengue Classical, Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and Dengue Shock Syndrome.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), dengue infection causes flu-like illness, and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue.

“There is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue, but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1 percent. Dengue prevention and control depends on effective vector control measures,” it added.

Mentioning that there is no national guideline for dengue clinical management in homoeopathy medicine in the country at present, Al-Emran Ali, who introduced himself as convener of central dengue treatment in homoeopathy committee, said they have given verbal guideline and asked the registered homoeopathic physicians to treat the dengue patients as per their instruction.
