Vehicular movement on Mirpur road came to a halt on Thursday as workers of a ready-made garment (RMG) factory continued demonstration blocking the road for arrear wages and bonus for the second consecutive day.

Witnesses said several hundred workers of Alif Apparels in Shyamoli area stayed away from their work and started demonstration for the second consecutive day demanding payment of arrear wages, bonus other allowances after their factory opened on Thursday morning.

Hundreds of workers blocked a portion of Mirpur Road near Shyamoli area resulting in massive traffic congestion on the busy road.

Addressing the gathering, the leaders of the workers threatened to continue their demonstration until their demands are met. On Wednesday too, they  took to the streets for realisation of the same demand.

Demanding Eid bonus and arrears, the RMG workers urged the government to take necessary steps in this regard without further delay.

It may be mentioned that Eid bonus was supposed to be paid to the workers by the factory management ahead of the Muslim festival.

But, the garment factory owners failed to disburse bonus and arrears on time resulting in untold sufferings to the workers.
