A 15-member committee on Thursday placed 111 recommendations to Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader for reducing accidents on roads and highways.

The committee headed by former minister Shajahan Khan placed the recommendations at the secretariat office of the minister.

A meeting of the Road Safety Council would be held on September 5 at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) office where the recommendations will get approval after necessary vetting, said the minister after receiving the recommendations.

The committee also proposed formation of a strong taskforce. Decision in this regard will also be taken on September 5, Quader said.

Of the recommendations, 50 need to be implemented urgently, he also said.

In the recommendation sheet, unskilled drivers, faulty vehicles, drivers’ carelessness, faulty road constructions and commuters’ unconsciousness were mentioned as the main causes of road accidents, he added.

The committee was formed on February 19 this year to restore discipline in transport sector.
