DNCC, DSCC conduct anti-mosquito drives

Penalise house owners

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) conducted joint drives under their jurisdictions in the capital on Thursday in a bid to destroy mosquito breeding grounds.

During the drives, the mobile teams of both the city corporations penalised a number of house owners for finding mosquito-breeding grounds and larvae inside their houses.

DNCC mobile teams under the leadership of the councillor of ward-19, Mofizur Rahman, conducted drives in Gulshan and Badda areas.

The mobile teams put up stickers on the walls of the houses where they found mosquito-breeding grounds and larvae.

Talking to reporters, the councillor said, “We’re visiting every household. In this drive, we’ll not skip any house. We’re also spraying pesticide inside the house and when we find presence of mosquito larvae, we warn the house owners.”

“We’re also pasting stickers on the walls of the buildings where we find mosquito larvae and mosquito breeding grounds. The stickers read “Mosquito larvae has been found in this house”.

After seven days, we’ll visit the same residence to check whether the concerned house owner has taken proper measures in this regard or not.  “We’ll fine the house owners as per city corporation act,” the councillor said.

“We’re giving chances to them, but if they don’t take steps in this regard then they won’t be spared,” he warned. 

“We’ve inspected 261 houses and mosquito larvae was found in 18 houses.”

The DNCC executive magistrate has realised fines from the owners of an under- construction building and Hashem Electronics Tk 1 lakh each. The magistrate also fined the owner of Harmony Holdings Tk 2 lakh as he found mosquito larvae on the rooftop of the building.

Besides, DNCC magistrate Md Sagir Hossain realised a fine amounting to Tk 1,75,000 from the owner of Gulf Auto Cars Limited at Baridhara G Block as he had found mosquito larvae over there.

Executive magistrate Shafiul Azam found mosquito larvae in four shops in Bhashantek area and fined Tk 10,000 to each and every owner of the shops.

Executive magistrate Saleha Binte Siraj found mosquito larvae in abandoned tyres in Tolarbag area of Mirpur and realised fine amounting to Tk 10,000 from the owner.

Executive magistrate Hamid Miah led a drive in Baridhara G Block area and fined Tk 10,50,013 to the shop owners for not having trade licenses and grabbing footpaths for doing business.

On the other hand, DSCC mobile teams inspected 118 residences under its jurisdiction and found mosquito larvae in four houses while two were found dirty.

The six house owners were fined Tk  44,000 as they did not take proper steps to destroy mosquito breeding grounds despite repeated requests by the city corporation.

DSCC zonal executive officer of Zone-1, Mizanur Rahman, conducted drives in Boro Moghbazar and Wireless areas where he inspected 32 houses.

Executive magistrate Babar Ali conducted drives in 30 residnces in Hazaribag area while magistrate Jahid Hossain inspected 20 residences in Fakirapol area.
