Bangladesh on Wednesday termed the issue of Jammu and Kashmir as an “internal matter” of India.

“Bangladesh maintains that the abrogation of Article 370 by the Indian Government is an internal issue of India”, said a foreign ministry statement hours after India’s external affairs minister S Jaishankar left Dhaka ending his maiden trip after assuming his new post.

It said “Bangladesh has always advocated, as a matter of principle, that maintaining regional peace and stability, as well as development should be a priority for all countries.”

This is the first comment by Dhaka on the matter since New Delhi revoked Article 370 of the constitution, which provided special status for Jammu and Kashmir.

“Article 370 of the Indian Constitution is a matter that relates solely to the citizens of India and it was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949. Any change or modification thus remains the sole prerogative of the Republic of India,” according to New Delhi.
