Drivers and staff members of the 22 depots of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) confined its chairman during a demonstration in its head office in the city’s Dilkusha area on Monday demanding payment of salary arrears.

Around 100 drivers and staffers were demonstrating in front of the BRTC headquarters.

They also demanded that all drivers who were previously fired for staging protests demanding their dues should be reinstated.

The protesters confined BRTC Chairman Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan inside the office and also punctured the tyre of his car during the protest.

Of the 22 depots of BRTC, employees of seven depots have arrears pending for more than three months while some have dues pending for 17 months.

Monday was the last working day of BRTC Chairman Farid and the workers are demanding that their arrears should be paid before he left.

The demonstrators claimed that previously the chairman made a commitment to pay all the dues, but he failed.

BRTC secretary Nur-e-Alom talked with demonstrators and assured them that all of their problems will be resolved soon, but the demonstrators denied withdrawing their agitation.
