‘Govt working to build hunger-free country’

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Monday said the government has been working with a target to build a country free of hunger.      

“Bangladesh has been self-reliant in food due to the government’s pragmatic steps,” she said while releasing fish fries at the lake of Parliament Secretariat marking the National Fisheries Week- 2019. 

Stressing the need for increasing the fish production to meet the demand of nutrition, the Speaker said the fisheries week plays an important role in raising awareness of fish cultivation, its preservation and increase of production.  

“Fishing sector sees a success under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her last two regimes. Bangladesh has been placed forth position in fish production in the world.

Bangladesh will move further if it is able to maintain the fish production,” she said.

Some 10,000 fish fries, including Katla, Ruhia, Mrigel were released at the lake.

Department of Fisheries under the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry organised the programme.

Chief whip Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, whip Mahbub Ara Gini, disaster management and relief ministry standing committee chairman AB Tajul Islam, railways ministry standing committee chairman ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury and former chief whip ASM Feroz, among others, were also present at the programme with Fisheries and Livestock minister Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru in the chair.
