The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday interrogated suspended but said to be a “powerful” police officer Mizanur Rahman at the Dhaka Central Jail over a bribe scandal.
A three-member ACC probe team led by its director Sheikh Md Fanafillah interrogated DIG Mizanur Rahman at the jail gate in Keraniganj from 11:00 am to 1:00pm for allegedly giving Tk 40 lakh to an official of the anti-graft body as bribe.On July 11, a Dhaka court allowed ACC to grill him at the jail gate on July 15 following a petition submitted by its director Sheikh Md Fanafillah seeking permission for grilling him.
On July 7, ACC interrogated Mizan’s bodyguard, Redoy Hasan, and driver Saddam Hossain at its headquarters.
On June 26, the anti-graft body interrogated his office staff Sumon.
Earlier, on July 2, the same court sent Mizan to jail rejecting his bail plea in a case filed against him on charge of amassing over Tk 3 crore beyond his known sources of income.
DIG Mizan recently brought an allegation against ACC director Khandaker Enamul Basir that he had taken Tk 40 lakh as bribe from him.
On June 10, ACC suspended Basir on charges of leaking information and breaching service discipline. The move came a day after a private television channel aired a report in which DIG Mizan alleged that Basir took bribe amounting to Tk 40 lakh, for clearing him of allegations.Earlier, ACC began an investigation in May last year against Mizan. He came under the scanner in January 2018 when he was an accused of forcibly marrying and torturing a woman. Mizan was soon withdrawn from his post at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
On June 24, ACC filed a case with its Integrated District Office in Dhaka against Mizan, his wife Sohelia Anar Ratna and nephew Mahmudul Hasan, a sub-inspector (SI) of police, on charges of amassing over Tk 3 crore beyond known sources of income.
