DSCC misses deadline

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has missed the June deadline for completing the modernization work of Golapbag playground of the capital for the fourth time due to ‘negligence of officials’ of city corporation and the contracting company.

Now, the DSCC and the contracting agency say that it will take six months more to complete the modernization work, meaning locals of Jatrabari, Dholpur, Maniknagar and Sayedabad will have to wait more to use the playground which was off limits to them for 14 years as it was used during the construction of Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover.

According to DSCC engineers, the modernization work of the playground started in June 2016 which was supposed to end in June 2018.  The deadline was later extended until December 2018 and then again for April 2019 for the third time, but the contracting company UDC missed the deadline.

During a visit to the playground on Sunday, a handful of workers were spotted working on the site though much of the work is still left on the four-acre playground.

Talking to the daily sun, Md Sohel, in charge of the modernization work of the playground, however, claimed that much of the work has already been complete.

“We want to start the construction work of library and gallery-cum-commercial building. We will start the work of remaining part of boundary walls after the demolition of market on the south side of the playground.”

President of Golapbag Math Rokkha Andolon Hasanat Jubair said, “Even one third of the modernization work is not over yet. The construction work of the library has been stalled for a year while that of gallery, public toilet, commercial building and gymnasium has been stuck in basement.

“Even, the work of boundary walls, pavement and walkways are not complete. Only little work has been done on cricket and football pitches, but no work is done on basketball ground and children’s zones.

“Though the engineers are claiming that they need three to four months to complete the work, it may take years.”

DSCC zone-5 executive engineer Mithun Chandra Shill said, “After the initiation of the modernization work, DSCC has set up cattle market three times. Due to the cattle market, the modernization work was delayed.

“Now we have fixed the deadline of December 2019. I hope we will be able to finish our job within the stipulated time,” Engineer Mithun said.

Sub Assistant Engineer of DSCC Zone-5 Alamgir Hossain said under the project, DSCC will build a two-storey commercial building with a gymnasium, VIP gallery and office room. There will also be arrangements for cricket, football, volleyball, basketball and skating in the playground, he said.
