Tigers’ performance inspiring

Despite tremendous endeavours by some of our cricketers and spectacular achievements at the individual level, Tigers could not reserve a seat for them among the top fours to compete in the semi-final of this ICC World Cup. However, it is to be noted with pride and pleasure that impressive feats by some of our cricketers are indicative of and make us hopeful about far better performance by them in future. Shakib Al Hasan, the country’s ace cricketer and world’s topmost all-rounder, has been the symbol of marvellous progress of Bangladesh cricket. Having been consistent from beginning to the end, Shakib came out as one of the three topmost cricketers who crossed the 600-run mark in any edition of the World Cup.

With two centuries and five half-centuries, he equalled Sachin Tendulkar in hitting seven or more 50-plus in a single edition of the WC. He scored 606 runs in eight matches of this WC while Sachin had to his credit 673 runs from 11 matches in the 2003 World Cup and Mathew Hayden had scored 659 runs in the 2007 WC. It is an incredible accomplishment on the part of a Bangladeshi cricketer. Shakib is the face of Bangladesh cricket.

It may be mentioned that when Shakib intended to take part in the last general election, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also a great enthusiast and promoter of the country’s cricket, expressed her hope that Shakib had a greater role to play in the 2019 World Cup. Shakib brought fully into reality what the PM had hoped from him.

The world cricket lovers also noticed the stunning performance of Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman who claimed his 100 wickets in just 54 ODIs, with two consecutive five-wicket hauls in the current World Cup. It made him the country’s fastest and the world’s fourth fastest bowler to reach the milestone. And Mushfiqur Rahim had always been consistent throughout the tournament and helped lay the foundation for Tigers’ achievements.

Bangladesh cricketers have not only advanced in terms of skills and experience but also in the much needed temperament. Tigers had always been cool before all big challenges thrown by the opponents. We are strongly hopeful about their far greater successes in days to come.  However, they need to improve their skill further in all three departments of the game.
