At least four passengers were killed and over 200 others injured as a Dhaka-bound train from Sylhet derailed at Baramchal in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar on Sunday midnight.

Yardous Hasan, officer-in-charge of Kulaura police station, said a culvert broke down when Upaban Express was passing it around 11:45pm, causing its derailment.

Two bogies of the intercity train fell into Baramchal canal while another compartment overturned, police said.

“Five bogies of the train derailed, leaving four passengers dead,” police super Mohammad Shahjalal said.

Two of the deceased were identified as Manwara Parvin, 48, and Fahmida Yeasmin, 20.

The injured were taken to Kulaura Health Complex, Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and other hospitals.

The train accident suspended rail communications between Sylhet and Dhaka.

Two coaches of the train derailed and fell into the canal and a compartment turned turtle, said Shahed Ahmed, a passenger of the train.

Sub-inspector Harunur Rashid, duty officer at the police station, said they recovered four bodies from the spot around 1:45am on Monday.

He also said that two platoons of BGB members took part in the rescue operation.

A number of ambulances carried the injured passengers to hospitals with the help of the district administration and police.

On information, 27 units of firefighters and police took part in the rescue operation, said officer-in-charge of Kulaura Railway Police Station Md Abdul Malek.

Dulal Chandra Das, in charge of Kulaura rail station, said the train was overloaded with passengers as bus services on Dhaka-Sylhet highway were suspended following the breakdown of a bailey bridge in Brahmanbaria.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe body, including railway’s east-zone engineer Mizanur Rahman, was formed to investigate the incident.
