COX’S BAZAR: Two alleged ‘human traffickers’ including a Rohingya were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Teknaf upazila in the district on early Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Rubel, 23, son of late Rashid Ahmed of Teknaf municipality area and Rohingya Omar Faruk, 19, son of Habib Ullah of Kutupalong Refugee Camp at Ukhai upazila in the district.

Officer In-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das of concerned Teknaf police station said on information, they conducted a drive to arrest human traffickers in Katabunia Noukaghat area under the upazila around 1:00am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, human traffickers opened fire on the cops prompting them to retaliate with bullet that triggered a gunfight, he said.  At one stage of the gunfight, criminals fled the scene leaving bullet hit-bodies of the duo, the OC said.

They were rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where on-duty physicians declared them dead, he said adding that three cops including a sub inspector (SI) were also injured in the incident.  Two light guns (LGs), 11 rounds of bullet and 18 rounds of empty cartridge were recovered from the spot after the gunfight, the police officer said.
