Rupayan Group Chairman Liaquat Ali Khan Mukul was granted bail on Sunday in a case filed over the FR Tower fire in the capital’s Banani that killed 27 people in March this year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury passed the order after Mukul surrendered before the court and sought bail.

Liaquat’s lawyer SK Abu Sayeed told the court, “Mukul is nearly 60, and he is in poor physical condition. If he gets bail, he will not flee and won’t misuse the bail either.

“Mukul will appear in court on the fixed dates. So he can be granted bail.”

After hearing on his bail petition, the court granted him bail on grounds ill health.

The court also said the accused will remain on bail until police submit its report over the fire incident.

Earlier, two other accused – FR Tower’s illegal floor owner Tasvir Ul Islam and land owner SMHI Faruque – got bail on April 11 and May 6 respectively. With the Liaquat’s bail, all the accused in the case are now on bail.

On March 30, police filed the case accusing the three and some unknown persons over the devastating fire at Banani’s FR Tower on March 28.
