World No Tobacco Day to be observed today

The ‘World No Tobacco Day 2019’ will be observed across the country today with elaborate programmes.

Though, every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) and global partners celebrate the ‘World No Tobacco Day’ (WNTD) on May 31 but the day is being observed in the country today focusing on the multiple ways that exposure to tobacco affects the people’s lunges.    

The slogan of the day for this year is ‘don’t let tobacco: take your breath away. Choose health, not tobacco’.

Different government and non-government organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day.

President M Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque and Md Ashadul Islam, secretary to the Health Service Division of the ministry issued separate messages on the eve of the day.

Besides, the national dailies will publish special supplements while Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and other private TV channels will air special programmes highlighting the harmful effects of tobacco use.
