The 5th phase of the ongoing upazila Parishad elections will be held at 21 upazilas today (Tuesday).
Voters will exercise their franchise between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm to choose their local government representatives.The polls campaign ended on June 16. The police administration has taken adequate security measures to avert any untoward incidents during voting.
Earlier, elections to 463 upazila Parishad (councils) were held out of the country’s 491 upazilas in the first four phases.
Elections in the rest 12 upazilas were held earlier in different times after the completion of the tenure of the respective upazila councils.
In the elections to 463 upazila councils, more than 95 per cent of the chairman posts were bagged by Awami League leaders either nominated by the party or contested as rebel candidates, according to the unofficial results compiled by the EC officials.
In the fourth phases, 131 independent candidates, mostly AL rebels, were elected defeating AL-nominated candidates. Besides, 298 AL-nominated chairman candidates won the elections while 108 of them were elected uncontested.
