Monsoon begins

City dwellers welcomed rains in the first day of the Bengali month Ashar as people celebrated the advent of rainy season with various programmes on Saturday. 

People celebrated the day with different traditional programmes like making special food and listening and singing music.

Styan Sen Shilpi Ghosty organised Rain Festival at Institute of Fine Arts on the campus of Dhaka University on Saturday. DU Vice Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the programme.

Prof Akhtaruzzaman said rain decorate the nature with colourful fruits and flowers. People can enjoy beauty of nature in countryside during the rainy season.

“Rainy days are best season for planting trees and cultivating crops. So rain is an occasion of festival for all of us,” Prof Akhtaruzzamn said.

Earlier on Friday, Meteorology Department forecasted that light to moderate rain and thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at different places in the country.

Rains may occur at most places over Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, at a few places over Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Barishal divisions, and at one or two places over Khulna and Rajshahi divisions with moderately heavy rainfalls at places over Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
