CHATTOGRAM: Police on Friday arrested five man on charge of gang-raping a woman at Karnaphuli upazila in the district.

The arrestees identified as Md Ilias, 32, Janab Ali, 30, Md Sekandar, 33, Kamal Uddin, 28, and Yunus, 25, hailed from different areas under the Karnaphuli upazila.

Of the arrestees, Ilias and Kamal are workers of an oil-ship, Ali and Sekandar run shops while Yunus is a CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver.

Sources said the 26-year-old victim, who hailed from Noakhali district, got married with a person at village Dakkin Bandar at the Karnaphuli upazila.

She got introduced with Ilias on her way to Chattogram city from the upazila by boat a few months back.

Ilias and the woman developed a relationship as brother and sister following the contact.

Meanwhile, the victim’s husband shifted residence to the city’s Patharghata area where they have been living for the last couple of months.

The victim took Tk 800 from Ilias as loan for her treatment around one month ago, said the sources.  As she wanted to refund the money, accused Ilias asked her to come to the Karnaphuli upazila on Wednesday evening.

After coming in Charpatharghata area under the upazila at around 9:30pm, Ilias accompanied by Ali tactfully took the victim away to an abandoned house at Juldha union by CNG-run auto-rickshaw of Yunus.  Ilias and Ali also fed liquor to the victim forcibly on the running auto-rickshaw, said the sources.

Later, Sekandar and Kamal joined the criminals and raped the woman.

The victim lodged complaint verbally against the rapists with Karnaphuli police station on Thursday noon.

Inspector (Investigation) Jobayer Syed of the police station said following the complaint, they arrested all the accused in a 16-hour drive that ended on Friday morning.

In the primary interrogation, the arrestees admitted that they violated the woman, he said.

The victim filed a case under ‘Women and Children Repression Prevention Act’ accusing the arrestees with the police station early Friday, added the inspector.
