Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor Sayeed Khokon on Thursday pledged to fight militancy and terrorism.

DSCC along with its councilors would work with Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit to curb violent extremism and terrorism, he said.

The mayor said, “To eradicate militancy and terrorism, everyone has to be aware of this kind of offences.”

He came up with the remarks at a seminar titled “Responsibilities of Public Representatives to Resist Violent Extremism” at DSCC conference room.

Bangladesh is marching forward from all accounts and the country has secured second position in terms of economic growth. But, the progress may come to a halt if the violent extremism cannot be controlled, Khokon said.

Militancy is now under control for swift action of CTTC against the crime. But, people’s awareness is a must to keep the misdeed under control.

CTTC unit chief Monirul Islam, also the additional commissioner of police, said, “We are doing well in controlling militancy and terrorism as people are working with us unitedly. Bangladesh is now a role model to curb the militancy following the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s zero tolerance policy against it. Many technologically advanced countries are following Bangladesh’s footstep to control the menace.”

He also said, “Many countries of the world invited us to share experience and expertise of restraining militancy after we successfully handled holey artisan bakery militant attack.”

Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia, among others, spoke on the occasion.
