Cox’s Bazar is one of the top tourism gems in the country for its largest unbroken sea beach. But, taking it to the international standard falls short of scores of measures required in the development of communication and other infrastructures. In this situation, the Prime Minister has disclosed that Cox’s Bazar airport will be upgraded to an international hub for airway communication in this region. This is indeed an encouraging piece of news.
As we know that Cox’s Bazar has an airport, but it has limitations which are indeed the major bottlenecks to the development of tourism based on the beach city. Though many countries in this region are earning a huge amount of money from tourism, Bangladesh stays long back in this respect. It is crucial for utilising all development potentials to reach the developed country milestone. The government is working relentlessly to develop the tourism industry. We are aware of some mega tourism projects in Cox’s Bazar aiming at developing the tourism sector as a vibrant industry. Already the Marine Drive Road has been constructed and the railway network from Chattogram to Cox’s Bazar is progressing in full swing.
The government wants to transform the tourism industry within the next five years for increasing its share significantly in the country’s economic development. It is going to implement three mega projects in the Cox’s Bazar district under the initiative of the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA).
The government has taken up projects to develop three exclusive tourism parks – Naf Tourism Park, Sabrang Tourism Park and Sonadia Eco Tourism Park – at three spots in Cox’s Bazar. All these gigantic strides missed a modern airport.
The expansion of Cox’s Bazar airport will hopefully meet the gap. As a refuelling station and hub of airway communication, the airport is expected to expand its earning capability manifold, provided that it will not waste its utility due to inefficiency and corruption.
BEZA aims to generate $2 billion for the economy through the projects and create two hundred thousand new jobs. We hope the timely implementation of the modernisation of the airport will help complete the endeavour for utilising the tourism potentials in the country.
