BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday came up with nine-point demand, including ensuring due prices of paddy in a bid to resolve crisis of farmers.

“The farmers have been frustrated for not receiving fair price for their paddy. Around 1.5 crore farmer families are now suffering a lot. We agreed on the farmers’ logical demand for buying paddy by the government directly from farmers,” he said.

The BNP leader came up with the statements addressing a press conference at the party central office in Nayapaltan of the capital in the morning.

Other demands include allocation of extra Tk 10,000 more to buy paddy from farmers, announcement of paddy price before monsoon, buying paddy directly from farmers and providing loan for famers without interest for at least three months.

“The present worst condition of farmers is a manifestation of the wrong policy of the government. We are demanding that the government take special step to end sufferings of the farmers,” Fakhrul said.

He said the government on the one hand is claiming that they have achieved self-sufficiency in production of rice while on the other hand it is importing rice.

“The government is buying paddy from millers instead of farmers. In this situation, the rice millers are benefitting and farmers are setting fire on paddy field,” Fakhrul added.
