CHATTOGRAM: A stone-laden lighter vessel sank in the river Karnaphuli on Thursday early hours.

However, all the crewmembers of the lighter vessel reached the river bank safely after the accident. Sources said the vessel ‘MV Sea Crown’ arrived in the Firingee Bazar Bridge Ghat area with 1,000 tonnes of stone.

It was offloading stone near the river bank on south side of the Shah Amanat Bridge. Suddenly, bottom of the vessel got cracked and it sank in the river slowly, said Water Transport Cell (WTC) Executive Director (ED) Mahbub Rashid.

All the crewmembers of the vessel managed to reach the river bank safely, he said.  The vessel is owned by businessman Abu Taher, proprietor of ‘Mamata Trading Agency,’ said the ED.

Contacted, Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Secretary Md Omar Faruk told the daily sun that as the vessel sank near the Shah Amanat Bridge, it was not hampering vessel movements to and from the port jetties.
